12 January Demonstration Mark Baker Mark will be known to many of our members as the editor of Woodturning Magazine and also for his very informative demonstrations and workshops at the Harrogate Woodworking Show, which always attract a big audience. It is a long time since we saw him at Sheffield Woodturning Club so it will be interesting to see what he has to show us this evening. Let’s just hope the weather doesn’t prevent this meeting from going ahead.

Whatever Margaret’s project is this evening, I feel sure it will be very interesting. www.margaretgarrard.co.uk

Mark Hancock

Mark is a world renowned woodturner who decided to take up turning as a career in 1989 when the firm he worked for relocated and he chose not to go with them. After training with a professional turner he specialised in turning high quality decorative and functional bowls and individual vessels for craft fairs around the country. In 1998 he was commissioned by the Foreign Office to produce work for visiting dignitaries attending the Cardiff European Union Summit and in 2002 he was one of the main presenters at the Great Britain International Woodturning Seminar, with turners from around the world. In addition to demonstrating and teaching, he produces one off pieces for galleries and exhibitions. www.markhancock.co.uk

Les Thorne

Les is a world renowned demonstrator and many of you will have seen him demonstrating at wood shows around the country, but with him living so far away, it’s a real coup for us to get him to come and demonstrate at our club. He has been involved with wood for the majority of his life. Having worked as a saw doctor and been company director of his family’s timber mill, he turned to woodturning in 1998. Make sure you book early for this one, you won’t be disappointed. www.noturningback.co.uk/ntbk

SWC will have our usual large marquee with work from club members being displayed for sale.

David Springett

David wowed us all on his last visit with his seemingly impossible projects and unusual items. His interest in woodturning began when he was a woodwork teacher. He read every book available at the time on the subject of woodturning, practiced and experimented then left teaching nearly 20 years ago to earn his living doing what he loves most, turning wood. It will be interesting to see what interesting turnings he can amaze us with this evening. www.davidspringett.fws1.com

Bob Chapman

Bob is an ‘old friend’ of SWC who’s demonstrations never fail to attract a lot of interest. He is a turner who can produce some beautifully artistic work but never forgets the basics and will happily demonstrate an artistic piece and something functional on the same evening. It’s always a pleasure to see Bob demonstrate.

8 November Demonstration Steve Wright Steve will be known to everyone who comes to our meetings, in fact he is probably the most popular member of the club as everyone rushes to greet him as soon as they see him. Could it be his magnetic personality, his charm and witty repartee or is it the wood he brings to sell to us that we all love him for! This will be the first time he has stood up in front of us to give a demo, however he won’t be producing shavings as he will be giving us a talk with a slide show. This should be an interesting evening.
18 November SWC Christmas Fair   Our third Christmas Fair will be held at Wood Lane Countryside Centre and will run from 11:00 am until 5:00pm and it'll only cost you £1. We'll be running two lathes and demonstrating the fine art of woodturning - including demonstrations from our youngest members. There will also be a large range of woodturning items for sale, all made by members of our club where you're sure to find some useful and unique Christmas presents. There will also be tea/coffee available.

Nikos Siragas

Nikos is as much an artist as he is a turner. He seems to be able to see shapes and designs in a piece of wood that most people cannot imagine. He only comes to the UK for a short time each year so we are very lucky to be able to welcome him back to our club again this evening. www.siragas.gr
