Programme of Events for 2013
All Demonstrations take place in the Grain Loft, from 7pm until around 10pm, doors open from 6pm.

All Hands-on sessions take place in the Grain Loft, from 6pm until 9’ish.
All day events are highlighted thus.
Mark Raby is now running our "Club Shop" and can supply anything you require for woodturning - tools, abrasives, finishes etc. He will be at the club on the nights indicated below, but on other nights a smaller range of his essential supplies will still be available.

Martin is a production turner who is best known for his light pulls. He is an exotic wood merchant and has been to our club on a couple of occasions, selling wood, but this will be the first time we have seen him demonstrate. Whilst looking him up on the internet I found a lovely nutmeg grinder that he had turned, for sale at Burford Woodcraft, so I am hoping to see him do this at our club. |

Peter Wood Pole lathe turner |
Peter is a pole lathe turner, based in Leicestershire. He plans to give us a talk about the history of the lathe; do a demonstration on his pole lathe and show us how to make a chair seat. This sounds as if it could be a busy evening. |

14 March | Club AGM | Annual General Meeting - 7:00 pm start - discussion about
the Club's activities over the past year and selection of
our charity to sponsor for the next 12 months. There will also be a "Bring & Buy" sale during the evening. So all those bits and pieces you've been meaning to sell - bring them along and someone will be grateful. |

Simon Whitehead Turner |
Simon has been turning for a number of years, many of which he has spent as a professional. He firmly believes that turning should be fun and enjoyable and attempts to instill this into everyone he meets. He is a regular contributor to Woodturning magazine and spends most of his woodturning time either demonstrating or giving private tuition. |

Paul has been a full-time wood turner/artist since 2007. He started selling his work in 2008, mainly on private commissions and won a much sought after bursary from the Worshipful Company of Turners in 2011. He produces hollow forms, sculptural pieces and large diameter bowls and platters mainly, but not exclusively, from sycamore, beech and ash, which he sources from the Macclesfield Forest, close to where he lives. |

Joe Laird woodturning is a small family business based in
Co. Meath Ireland. Woodturning and carving have been a part
of Joe's trade since he began work as a cabinetmaker when he
was a boy. Joe has crafted quite a number of award winning pieces
over the years, his first taking 1st place in the beginners
section of the IWG national seminar 1993. It was at this point
that he realised he had quite a talent for woodturning. From
that point on, his work won award after award as he entered
pieces into the intermediate and advanced sections. In 2005
Joe became a semi-professional turner, making commission pieces
and teaching adult and teen classes. In 2007 he took the final
leap and became a full-time professional turner. Joe was recommended
by Andrew Hall, this is sure to be an entertaining day. |

Peter Berry Wood carver |
Peter is one of
the best known woodcarvers in the UK. His relaxed and easy style
has made him a regular at demonstrations and courses throughout
the UK. Peter is a prolific carver, best known for his human
and animal character studies and has written many instructive
articles on the carving of country folk, distinguished by their
charm and depth of character. A Yorkshireman born and bred,
Peter derives much of his inspiration for his characters from
his own northern background. |

Emergency Services Day |
Emergency Services Day takes place on Sunday 7th
July 2013 from 11am until 4pm at Niagara - the South Yorkshire
Police sports and social club, Niagara Road, Wadsley Bridge,
Sheffield - S6 1LU. This is a day where all the emergency services are involved together with various displays i.e. fire appliance, chip pan fire, educational ambulance, various police sections, we also have stalls selling various items, arena displays with events such as falconry, police dogs, morris dancers a fun fair and eating outlets. SWC will demonstrating woodturning and have a range of turned items for sale. |

Margaret is a regular and much loved visitor to our club. Her demonstrations are always interesting, whether she is turning an involuted vase, an off centre bowl or something a little more conventional. You can be sure you will be in for an enjoyable evening. |

Andrew Hall Turner |
Andrew is another regular and very popular visitor to our
club. He is most well know as the man who turns hats but on
his last couple of visits we have seen him turn some chunky
items from pieces of the ancient oak he managed to get from
Durham cathedral. He has had a lifelong passion for working
with wood and, following a career teaching woodworking, he is
now an international demonstrator whose demonstrations are always
interesting and informative. |

David lives and works in Scarborough, where he has a gift shop selling his work and a workshop where he holds courses in woodturning. He has a passion for working with wood and looking at ways to show its natural beauty using traditional techniques combined with modern ideas such as airbrushing, texturing, piercing etc. He gets his inspiration from the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds him in Scarborough and after seeing a demonstration by Joey Richardson he realised that his only limitation was his imagination. |

George Bell Talk |
Talk on Ancient Kauri plus "Bring & Buy" Sale George is a long standing member of our club and, those who know him, will know that he often spends the winter months in New Zealand. He has kindly offered to give us a presentation on Ancient Kauri, the oldest workable timber on earth, which is native to New Zealand. This should be a very interesting talk on a timber that very few of us have had the chance to turn. |

Mick is another regular visitor to Sheffield Woodturning Club and over the years we have seen his repertoire develop. Be it decorated boxes with finials, piercing, texturing, beautifully coloured bowls and platters or a new technique we are yet to see, you can be sure of a good evening when Mick is at the club. |
17 November | SWC Annual Show & Christmas Fair |
SWC Show | Our fourth Annual Show will be held at Wood Lane Countryside Centre. This will be an 'all day' event, where we will be demonstrating woodturning. There will also be a large range of woodturning items for sale, all made by members of our club. There will be tea/coffee available. Entry will be £1 and the event will run from 10:30am - 4:00pm. |

Sorby’s and Turner’s Retreat are well known to the club and always have something new to show us. This will be a good opportunity to find out more about the Robert Sorby range and maybe purchase that essential tool that is missing from your workshop. |
