Demonstration

Mark & Lisa Raby
Mark is a great demonstrator and has a wealth of experience in wood finishing, showing a range of finishes to suit every taste and enabling both the novice and experienced wood turner to achieve a beautiful finish with advice on selecting the right product.
As far as Lisa is concerned - all you guys out there who think you can only draw stickmen, now’s the time to learn to burn.

Nick Agar

+ Elston Sawmill
Nick is a woodturning artist who has a reputation for producing highly individual, beautifully crafted art. He is inspired by organic forms, pottery and his natural surroundings and produces large scale, multi-textured, turned wood sculptures. He specialises in hollow forms and large diameter work and is particularly renowned for his wall sculptures. Coming from Devon I suspect that few, if any of us have ever seen him before, so we should be in for a real treat. www.turningintoart.com

David Springett

+ Elston Sawmill
David has been turning lace bobbins for over twenty years and is considered to be one of the country’s leading bobbin makers. When not turning bobbins he developed an interest in turning apparently impossible and somewhat improbable items, such as spheres within spheres, stars within cubes and delicate lattices with no apparent means of support. This should be an interesting evening and one not to be missed. www.davidspringett.fws1.com

Bob Chapman
Bob has demonstrated all sorts of interesting projects to us over the years, including his famous ‘spiky ball’, his very unusual and artistic ‘Married Quarters’ as well as more everyday items such as an earring stand, spinning top box and salt pot. It will be interesting to see what he can surprise us with on this occasion.

Mick Hanbury

+ Elston Sawmill
Mick is well known to the club as he has visited us a number of times in the past. We have seen him demonstrate turning beautiful finial boxes, decorative platters, piercing and texturing techniques and have seen his unique style of decorative finishes develop over the years. It will be interesting to see what new techniques he has developed since the last time we saw him.

Phil Irons

Full Day Demo
Phil will be well known to many of our members as he can be regularly seen at wood shows up and down the country. He is probably best known for his large hollow forms, often turned from wet wood, but he has also done his fair share of production turning, having made over 10,000 caddy spoons for Taylors of Harrogate. In his last visit to the club he concentrated more on explaining woodturning techniques, but he assures us that for this visit he plans to produce lots of shavings. www.philironswoodturning.co.uk

Alan Batty

+ Elston Sawmill
Allan is an internationally recognised wood turner, renowned for his mixture of wit, skill and stories of his days as a production turner. This is his first visit to our club and from what I have read on the Internet we are lucky to have him demonstrating to us as he had planned to retire in 2005. This should be a very special evening, not to be missed.

John Berkeley

Full day Demo
John is an ‘old friend’ of Sheffield Woodturning Club, having demonstrated to us on a number of occasions in the past. However, a few hours in an evening is not long enough to appreciate some of the amazing puzzles and boxes he makes, so it will be a real treat to be able to sit back and enjoy a full day watching John at work.

Clive Brooks
Clive and his colleagues at Turner’s Retreat are well known to the club and always have something new to show us. This will be a good opportunity to find out more about the Robert Sorby range and maybe purchase that essential tool that is missing from your workshop.

Nikos Siragas
Nikos is an artistic turner from Greece who combines carving and piercing with turning to produce some very beautiful and individual work. He gave a very inspirational demonstration when he visited us in December 2009 which left many of us asking when we could see him again. We are very fortunate to include him in our programme again this year as he only gives a few demonstrations a year in the UK. www.siragas.gr
